Four attackers raided a police station in India’s Punjab state Monday, killing four people, authorities said.
Two attackers are surrounded while authorities look for two others, said Gurpreet Tur, the police chief of Gurdaspur district, where the incident took place.
“Our operation is on,” he said.
Tur described it as a terror attack, but said it was not immediately clear which group the attackers belonged to.
A Sikh insurgency has raged in the state for decades, but has been crushed by security forces over the years.
The top district administrator discounted reports the attackers were holding hostages, but said some civilians were “holed up” inside a nearby residential building.
“There are no hostages. There are some people in a nearby building,” Avinav Tur said.
