CLEARFIELD – Police Chief Mark Brooks asked the Lawrence Township Supervisors at Tuesday night’s meeting for approval to allocate officers for a warrant detail.
He said the department has more than 200 unserved criminal and traffic warrants. He proposed a three-month trial, allocating one, eight-hour shift per month for serving warrants.
The supervisors approved the request on a non-overtime basis.
Brooks also reported that Wave 3 of The Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project (PAADEEP) began Monday, and will end Aug. 30.
The Lawrence Township Police Department received a grant through the PAADEEP program to supplement costs of manpower and other expenses to conduct the added surveillance for the program.
Brooks said Wave 3 will focus more on safety concerns with increased summer traffic, including speeding, considered a form of aggressive driving. Also targeted in Wave 3 will be intersection and traffic light violations, and roadwork zone violations. Brooks said there will be no warnings for work zone violations
The project is a statewide initiative using crash data to identify aggressive driving locations, which are targeted with enforcement, public awareness and training to reduce aggressive driving accidents.
Brooks announced part-time police officers Tonya Marshall and Shawn Kronenwetter have completed all the requirements and will be placed on the department’s duty schedule for August.
Brooks reported that the department took part in an “active shooter” drill in June at the Curwensville High School. He said the Curwensville School District sponsored the drill, which also included Curwensville Borough police, school staff and local emergency services.
Brooks also reported that Officer Crystal Panabianco has completed an advanced crime scene processing training through Sirchie Corp. of North Carolina.
Supervisor Ed Brown noted that Panabianco researched the training herself and had agreed to attend on her own time. The township had previously approved to pay the cost of the training.
