A former disc jockey, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter once said that he could “make a party happen.”
And that he did on Saturday, when he commemorated his final Fourth of July as the city’s mayor with a special performance. Backed up by The Roots, Nutter performed “Rapper’s Delight,” a song he has become accustomed to performing in office.
He performed the Sugar Hill Gang classic at his 2008 inauguration, at a restaurant opening in 2010 and at his second term inauguration in 2012.
And, like any bold entertainer, he ended with a mic drop.
The crowd welcomed his latest rendition of the song, and many took to social media to express their excitement.
Philadelphia Police Officer Thomas J. Nestel said “he will never get tired” of seeing Nutter do “Rapper’s Delight.”
Others, however, like sports radio host Jason Myrtetus, seemed surprised the mayor could actually rap. Maybe he didn’t get the memo.
Philadelphia preacher Kevin R. Johnson said he “can’t get enough MC Michael Nutter” and had to repeat watch it on DVR “to make sure it was real.”
Roots percussionist Frank “Knuckles” Walker called the mayor’s performance “epic.”
Comic book artist Phil Noto said seeing the mayor “kill it” might be one of the greatest things I’ve ever witnessed.”
Philadelphia news anchor Alex Holley captured perhaps the crowd’s favorite moment: the mic drop.
