When your babysitter was Andy Warhol and your father is a rock legend, an acute interest in the arts is perhaps to be expected. So it comes as no surprise that Jade Jagger — the accomplished jewelry designer, and daughter to Mick Jagger and human rights activist Bianca Jagger — has built a formidable reputation as a far-reaching creative.
Outside of her bohemian luxury jewelry line — which is stocked in the likes of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and the Galeries Lafayette in Paris — Jagger has collaborated on fashion collections, decorated luxury hotel suites around the world, and designed a growing list of products, including the bottle for Guerlain’s Shalimar fragrance and a diamond-studded ice pick for Belvedere Vodka.
And somehow, the 43-year-old finds the time to serve as a doyenne of the London social circuit, travel extensively (she has a second home in Goa), and parent three daughters.
We caught up with Jagger to find out what intrigues and invigorates her today.
Your all-time classic? I’ve got a beautiful sofa that was made by George Sherlock that I bought when I was 19. I’ve probably had it reupholstered 10 times.
Your current obsession? Coffee is always high up on my list!
The work of art that always moves you? Matisse’s “Dance” has always had a special place in my heart. I love the simplicity and the boldness of it.
The most heavily thumbed book on your shelf? Georgian Jewellery: 1714-1830 by Ginny Redington Dawes. I’ve got so many great inspirations from it, and it really comes out in my work a lot.
The last show you saw? Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty [at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.] I thought it was so beautifully exhibited. It’s incredible how presentation can enhance the otherworldly beauty of his work. It shows where fashion and art meet.
Your rising star? A young designer called Angharad Owen. She lives in Ibiza, where I also have a home. In 2009, when Angharad was 21, she found out she had stage 3 skin cancer. On her 21st birthday, she went into have surgery to have a large tumor on her upper arm removed. She was left with a huge scar.
With no design experience Angharad followed YouTube tutorial videos and taught herself to design and sew her own kaftans and beach coverups. Firstly she made these designs to cover her scar, but then friends and family asked her to make similar designs for them. Angharad turned her living room into a studio, and now she hand-makes her collection from locally sourced fabrics. She sells them on her own website and through small independent boutiques in Ibiza. She’s an inspiring and creative young woman.
Your secret talent? I can just about manage to cook anything.
Your Sunday afternoon pleasure? A bit of gardening. Whether it’s in a city garden or somewhere in the countryside, it always makes you feel better to get your hands in the dirt.
The thing people find most surprising about you? How short I am. I’m 5’4″.
The occasion you’re most looking forward to? My daughter’s 23rd birthday this weekend. We’re going down to Cornwall for a bit of quality time.
Home is … Somewhere I’d love to build.
