The No. 1 trending hashtag on Twitter is also the sentiment expressed by many in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision on same-sex marriage. In a 5-4 decision, the court ruled Friday that states cannot ban same-sex marriage.
Among celebrities — many of whom have been determined advocates for the right to marry — reaction was swift and joyful.
Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of the film “Milk” and a longtime gay activist, tweeted almost instantly upon learning of the court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges.
“WE HAVE MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!” he exulted.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, one of the stars of “Modern Family,” was only slightly less excited.
Others were quietly grateful. Zachary Quinto was “overwhelmed with gratitude.” Neil Patrick Harris offered thanks to Justice Anthony Kennedy, seen as the key vote in the decision.
“Thank you Justice Kennedy,” he tweeted. “Your opinion is profound, in more ways than you may know.”
George Takei was impressed by the outpouring.
Many others tweeted their praise.
Naturally, some advertisers couldn’t resist joining in — though few commenters minded.
But Ellen DeGeneres, who has been married to Portia de Rossi since 2008 and was the first openly gay star on television, got right to the point.
“Love won,” she tweeted, with another hashtag: “#MarriageEquality.”
