Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced Monday that the U.S. will provide support to a NATO rapid response team, capable of deploying in two to seven days, a shorter response time than the current NATO response force.
Carter said the US will provide a range of capabilities, including command-and-control, special operations capabilities, and logistical expertise.
This will not involve an increase in U.S. troops to Europe, Carter said.
A country would put in a request to Gen. Phillip Breedlove, the commander of Supreme Allied Command, for rapid response and the US would consider the request. This comes amid growing concerns in the region about Russian activities in Ukraine.
