CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Area High School Lady Tide softball team begin the journey into the District 9 “A” playoffs starting on Wednesday at DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) at 4:30 pm in a quarterfinal contest.
Both DCC, (15-3), the fourth seed, and fifth seeded Curwensville received a bye in the first round.
The Lady Cardinals defeated the Lady Tide twice this season, 8-0 and 4-1.
Curwensville finished the 2015 regular season with a 12-7 record and are entering the “A” playoffs for the first time in a few years.
Curwensville has won a total of 12 District 9 “A” softball titles since 1976. The years of “A” championships are 1976, 78, 79, 81, 83, 84, 85, 86, 89 ,95, 2007 and 2009.
In 2013 the Lady Tide won its only D-9 “AA” crown.
State “A” championships were earned in 2007 and again in 2009.
Junior Rylee Young has been in the circle all except 1/3 of an inning this season and has compiled a record of 12-7 with an ERA of 3.61. Young has struck out a total of 126 batters, while walking just 32 in 122.2 innings of work.
The Lady Tide have seven starters that hit .333 or better during the regular season, led by senior catcher Alaina Stiles who batted .508 and led the squad with 30 hits, 20 runs scored, 15 RBI’s, seven doubles, and 39 total bases.
Shortstop Hannah Dixon, a sophomore, was next with a .407 batting average and a team leading 13 stolen bases.
The five other Lady Tide who hit.333 or better were Megan McCartney at .356, Young .355, Haley McGarry .348, Nikki Harker .344 and sophomore Kayley Harnett at .333.
McCartney, who had the lone home run for Curwensville during the season, and Harker are seniors, while McGarry is a junior.
Two other seniors, Morgan Ross and Jordan Round, batted .278 and .233 respectively.
Curwensville won three games in a row three times during the year and lost no more than two straight games (twice) in 2015.
Elk County Catholic, at 17-2 is the top seed, with Smethport (16-1) at # 2, and Port Allegany (16-2) at # 3.
