A U.S. citizen was killed Wednesday when three gunmen attacked a hotel in Afghanistan’s capital, according to U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Monica L. Cummings.
The American wasn’t immediately identified.
Afghan special forces arrived at the scene and killed the three armed assailants behind the attack, an Afghan official said.
Security forces rescued more than 30 people, including trapped guests, from the Park Palace Guest House hotel, Kabul Crime Investigation Department Chief Farid Afzali said.
Of the dozens rescued, at least three people were injured, including an American woman, Afzali said.
Teams were finishing an operation to clear the building late Wednesday, he said.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack, which began around 8 p.m. Wednesday (11:30 a.m. ET).
Within an hour after the siege began, Afghan special forces surrounded the premises, a police official told CNN. Sporadic gunfire could be heard.
