CURWENSVILLE — As the season continues to wind down, the Curwensville Golden Tide baseball squad has only a week worth of games left on the schedule, including three games on the docket this week. But, after gaining a come-from-behind victory on Tuesday, they were ready to take the momentum to their home field as they would welcome in the Elk County Catholic Crusaders on Wednesday afternoon.
Already having lost to them this year, Curwensville was looking for revenge to even the season against the Crusaders. The game was close, but early hits and runs would be the difference.
It would be all that the Crusaders would need as they would hold on for the 3-1 victory.
Mitchell Struble pitched a solid three innings of relief to pick up the win, giving up the only run to the Tide, and two strikeouts. A.J. Bloom would suffer the loss, as he pitched the entire game for the Tide but gave up 10 hits. Dan Singer would close out the game for ECC, earning the save in one inning of work, striking out three Tide batters.
The Crusaders would get things going in the first inning. Struble would score on an RBI-single by Stauffer, and then three batters later he would be brought home in the same way thanks to Brad Dippold.
That score would hold into the second inning until Brennen would score on another RBI-single by Sruble, which would end up being the final run by Elk County Catholic all game.
By that point, the Crusaders had only managed three hits, but thanks to three walks they plated three runs, which was all they would need.
It would be the sixth inning when Curwensville would get on the board.
An unearned run would be credited to Struble as two consecutive ground outs by Jake Terry and Jake B. Stiles would help bring in Noah Strickland, who reached first on an error and then advanced to second in the same fashion.
Unfortunately for Curwensville, once Singer took to the mound in the seventh inning, the bats went silent. Bryce Timko struck out looking, and then both Austin Butlin and Jake C. Stiles would each go down on three pitches.
Curwensville (3-13) will stay at home for their game on Thursday as they host DuBois Central Catholic.
