CURWENSVILLE – It was all Lady Tide Monday afternoon in girls softball action as Curwensville took down Purchase Line 10-0, in a game that ended in the bottom of the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Curwensville defeated the Lady Red Dragons last Monday, 7-3.
However, on this Monday in Curwensville, Purchase Line could never get started as they trailed 9-0 after three innings.
The Tide was hitting on all offensive cylinders on this sunny, warm day, as the first six Curwensville hitters collected 12 of the team’s 13 hits.
That feat was not lost on Lady Tide head coach Allen Leigey, saying afterwards, “We really came out swinging today with the top six in our line-up getting 12 hits. We just hit the ball really well all afternoon.”
When the Lady Tide beat Purchase Line last Monday, Lady Red Dragon pitcher Kira Smith struck out 13 Curwensville hitters, even in defeat. Leigey liked the turnaround in that stat, “Last time out Smith (Kira) struck out 13 of our hitters. Today she only totaled four, which shows how focused we were.”
Curwensville scored four in the first inning, three in the second, two in the third and ended the game with one run in the bottom of the fifth that put the 10-run rule into play.
Pitcher Rylee Young led the Lady Tide with three base hits, but many others also stood out at the plate for Curwensville.
Alaina Stiles, Nikke Harker, Megan McCartney and Hannah Dixon all had two hits.
Harker drove in three runs and McCartney added two RBI’s.
Stiles had the lone extra base hit for Curwensville, a double.
Young picked up her eighth win of the year for the Lady Tide, surrendering just five hits, while striking out eight and walking none.
In the past two games Young has struck out a total of 16 without issuing a walk.
The Lady Red Dragons got two hits each from Morgan Zometsky and Smith. One of the hits for Smith was a triple.
With the win the Lady Tide move to 8-5 on the season and now qualify for the upcoming District 9 “A” playoffs.
The Lady Tide travel to Kane on Tuesday to play a doubleheader against the Lady Wolves. The first game is to start at 4:15 pm with game two to immediately follow.
