ALTOONA — (Report by Clearfield Head Coach John Jacob)
The Clearfield Boys and Girls Track and Field teams had a great night at the 66th Annual Western Coaches meet on Friday night. The girls were led by Sarah Lash, who was the only individual champion. Lash started her night with a personal best throw of 115 feet in the discus.. She then improved on her second attempt by throwing 123 feet, which turned out to be the winning throw. It was great to see all of her off-season work pay off with a championship at such a big invitational.
Next was the girls 4×800 meter relay of Rachel Glenny, Raquel Grice, Claire Mikesell and Paige Mikesell, who ran a season best time of 9:53 which was good for third place overall. This result greatly improves their confidence going into the Mountain League and District 9 AAA Championships over the next two weeks.
Claire Mikesell was also able to place fifth in the 800 meter run. She had a great race and was able to move up into a high scoring spot over the last lap. Her time of 2:24 was also a personal best time.
Rachel Glenny rounded out the place winners by placing sixth in the 300 hurdles. Rachel had a great night and was able to come within hundredths of a second from beating her District 9 opponents. The 300 hurdles will be a great district championship race.
On the boys side, Mason Royer was the top place winner coming away with third place in the 110 hurdles and a fourth place in the 300 hurdles. He has been stuck at the 16 second barrier and has been one or two hurdles away from breaking into the 15’s. In the finals, he had his break through race and was able to go well under 16 seconds. His 300 hurdle race wasn’t as nice; but even with a bad lane assignment he was able to run another personal best time and drop under 42 seconds for the first time.
The boys 4×100 relay of Jake Wingate, Casey Wilsoncroft, Mason Royer and Seth Caldwell improved on their best time of the season to place seventh. They got a look at their district opponents from Bradford and DuBois and are only two-tenths of a second away from punching their state championship ticket. This was only their second time running together all year and will now have two more weeks to work before heading into the district championships.
The Bisons will host the Mountain League Championship Meet on Wednesday at the Bison Sports Complex.
