BASEBALL
CLARION — After being one of five Clarion players honored on Senior Day at Memorial Field, second baseman Derek Danver (Clearfield) closed his career with a hit in both of the Golden Eagles’ losses, 8-2 and 5-2, to California Saturday afternoon.
He had an RBI double and scored a run in the nightcap.
Danver, who had two hits and two RBIs in a 9-4 victory over California at CONSOL Energy Park in Washington Friday, was one of the top hitters for the Golden Eagles at .336, finishing 36-for-107.
The 5-9, 200-pounder was second in hits and tied for second in runs batted in with 18.
He belted two home runs and five doubles and scored 11 runs.
During his one season at Penn State Altoona and three seasons at Clarion, Danver started 146 of 148 games he played and wound up with a .299 batting average.
He was 136-for-455 with 20 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 72 runs batted in.
Danver received only 19 walks, but he was hit by a pitch 28 times, 23 as a Golden Eagle for a total that is tied for second place in Clarion’s record book dating back to 1979.

ALTOONA — Freshman infielder Jarrett Fulmer (Clearfield) had a pair of doubles in 10 at-bats for Penn State Altoona last week.
The Lions split at Mount Aloysius Friday and D’Youville Saturday to finish in seventh place at 6-10 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and split with Hood College at Stewart Athletic Field Sunday for a 14-25 record.
Fulmer appeared in 27 games, starting 21 at second base or third base, and hit .234
He was 15-for-64, with four doubles, and drove in four runs and scored eight runs.
Sophomore Kurtis Krise (Clearfield) pitched in two games for the Lions, losing his lone decision.
The right-hander worked 4.1 innings and gave up seven hits and seven runs, five earned. He had one strikeout and three walks.

SOFTBALL
JOHNSTOWN — Freshman pitcher/right fielder Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) was 1-2 in three starts and had four hits, including her first home run, for Pitt-Johnstown in three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheaders last week.
Her win came in the 8-4 nightcap of the Mountain Cats’ sweep of Mercyhurst in Erie Saturday.
She surrendered seven hits in her 11th complete game, striking out two and walking two.
At the plate, Hoffman registered two of her hits with the solo homer putting the Mountain Cats ahead 2-0 in the second inning of a 7-3 first game loss at Indiana University of Pennsylvania Friday.
UPJ was swept by IUP and again Sunday by Gannon at Erie, the 2-4 week setting their PSAC-West record at 7-21. They are 7-29 overall.
Hoffman is 4-13 with 17 starts in 19 appearances. She’s pitched 88 innings and allowed 136 hits and 95 runs, 80 earned, with 32 strikeouts and 38 walks.

ERIE — Sophomore Heather Picard (Clearfield) pitched one inning in relief for Mount Aloysius in a 9-1 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference loss to Penn State Behrend
She hit one batter and gave up three hits and four runs, all unearned.
Picard is 1-0 in three appearances, allowing six hits and 10 runs, five earned, in 4.1 innings. She has logged two strikeouts with three walks and two hit batsmen.

MEN’S GOLF
BELLE VERNON — Thiel freshman Jason Thorp (Curwensville) carded rounds of 81 and 85 over the Cedarbrook Golf Course Friday and Saturday to tie for 24th at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Spring Championships.
His 166 total was 24th overall and second for the Tomcats, whose 328-328 scores gave them a 1,312 total for the fall and spring tournaments that are combined to determine the conference title. They finished fifth in the eight-team field.
Washington & Jefferson won the 2014-2015 championship with a 1,243 that edged Saint Vincent by five strokes.
Earlier in the week, Thorp posted an 84 at the New Castle Country Club as Thiel placed third among five teams in the Westminster Spring Invitational. He wound up in a tie for 19th place in the individual standings.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
LORETTO — St. Francis (Pa.) sophomore Rebecca Johnson (Curwensville) lowered her personal 3,000-meter steeplechase record for the second week in a row by crossing the Father Bede Track finish line in 13:09.49 at the Red Flash Open Saturday.
She placed second to earn three points for St. Francis, which was out pointed 81-77 by Duquesne.

SHIPPENSBURG — Sophomore Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) ran the leadoff leg for the Clarion 400-meter relay quartet that finished fourth in a 15-team race at Shippensburg’s Paul Kaiser Classic in Seth Grove Stadium Saturday.
She teamed with classmates Courtney Corban and Tatiana Cloud and senior Anna Pfingstler (DuBois) for a 49.50-second performance.
Shomo also placed 14th among 44 sprinters from 23 schools in the 100-meter dash in 13.21 seconds and was 23rd among 42 entries in the long jump with a leap of 4.76 meters (15 feet, 7½ inches).
