CURWENSVILLE — Brandon Orsich pitched his way into the Clearfield Area High School baseball record book with a six-inning no-hitter and Spencer Herrington was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate in a 13-0 victory over Curwensville Friday.
Orsich’s gem was highlighted by a career-high nine strikeouts.
The junior right-hander issued only one walk in his scintillating performance that extended the Bison’s winning streak to five. He did hit one batter.
Coach Sid Lansberry has watched at least a half dozen no-hitters in his 44 seasons at the helm, but he is unsure of the last one.
Suffice it to say it’s been many, many years.
“Brandon was real sharp,” Lansberry said. “He was hitting his spots and mixing his pitches real well. His curve ball seemed to get better as the game went on. He was in complete control.”
Orsich, now 3-1 for the 8-2 Bison, had plenty of support while helping his own cause with two singles and two RBIs.
Herrington’s career effort that included two doubles and two RBIs also was another feat that Lansberry said he would have to research to determine when a Bison last accomplished that.
“Spencer had a monster night,” Lansberry said. “We got a lot of production from the hitters in the top five spots.”
They combined for 15 of Clearfield’s season-high 18 hits and 10 of the 11 RBIs.
Thomas Summers had a pair of doubles and drove in four runs, Orsich aided his own cause with two hits and wo RBIs, Josh Sorbera singled and doubled and Cole Kephart chipped in two RBIs. Sorbera and Herrington also scored three runs apiece.
The Bison scored in every inning except the third.
They jumped in front 4-0 in the first on Summers’ RBI double, Orsich’s two-run single and Erik Sellers’ RBI groundout.
Summers doubled home Herrington and scored on Kephart’s single in the second.
The Bison picked up a singleton on Kephart’s sacrifice fly in the fourth, two runs on Herrington’s RBI double and Summers’ run-scoring groundout in the fifth and turned it into a Mercy Rule in the sixth.
Pinch-hit singles by Logan Lykens and Justin Fedder, two Golden Tide errors and RBI hits by Herrington and Summers added up to four runs.
Curwensville fell to 1-8.
Clearfield will be home for four Mountain League games next week. The Bison, who share first place with Central at 6-1, are booked against Bellefonte Monday, Tyrone Tuesday, Penns Valley Wednesday and Bald Eagle Area Friday.
