CURWENSVILLE – The Moshannon Valley girls softball team came to cold and windy Curwensville looking for its first win of the season. And, despite the inclement weather on this late April Friday afternoon, the Damsels took down the Lady Tide 11-4.
The win puts the Damsels at 1-5 on the year under head coach Gary Godin who has a roster of five freshmen out of 14 players.
Curwensville on the season now has a record of 5-3.
The Lady Tide scored first, in the second inning, as Nikki Harker led off with a single and scored later in the inning on an error.
The Damsels put four runs on the board in the top of the third, giving them a 4-1 margin, a lead they would not surrender. Haley Stodart keyed the inning with a double and then singles by Mickey Lansberry and Nov Dale along with a walk and a Tide error all helped the Moshannon Valley cause.
Curwensville rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the third frame on a Kayley Harnett single and two errors by the Damsels. After three innings it was 4-3 in favor of the visitors.
The Damsels added one run in the fourth, but it was the sixth inning that put the game away as Moshannon Valley added six runs to its total. The key blow for the Damsels in the sixth was a one out grand slam home run by first baseman Sidney Lewis that cleared the right center field wall.
The Lady Tide would score one in the bottom of the sixth as Harker again would lead off with a single and scored on an outfield error.
Curwensville committed seven errors on the day along with countless mental mistakes that Lady Tide head coach Allen Leigey was none too happy about, saying afterwards, “The numerous mental errors that happened today is what really was upsetting. We looked like a team that hadn’t played a game in a week, and actually, it was a week since we played. But that’s not an excuse because we go over things, time and time again every day in practice.”
Leigey then added, “We just didn’t hit the ball hard at all today for some reason and we can’t afford to play like this next time out (Monday at Purchase Line). If we do, we won’t win.”
The Tide picked up two hits each from Harker, Harnett and Megan McCartney.
Five players each had two hits for the well-balanced Moshannon Valley attack that included Stodart, Lansberry, Dale, Elmira Ecklund and winning pitcher Hannah Kitko.
Moshannon Valley is home versus Harmony on Monday at 3:30 pm while the Lady Tide travel to play Purchase Line at 4pm.
