Phoenix, AZ (KPHO) — Phoenix police were called to the scene of a shooting at a store near 24th street and McDowell just after 9 p.m. Tuesday. The store was reportedly being robbed at gunpoint by three suspects, and one person had been shot.
Originally it was believed that an employee thwarted the robbery by shooting a suspect. But police now say the store clerk did not shoot anyone, and in fact, one of the suspects accidentally shot himself.
Officers say the three suspects drove off after the robbery, but crashed their car near 27th street and Osborn. That’s when police say a gun went off and a suspect accidentally shot himself.
He has been taken to the hospital, and is expected to survive.
The other two suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. One man was caught and taken into custody without incident. Police set up a perimeter and began searching the area for the suspect who was still at large.
