HYDE — Huntingdon scored five runs in the last two innings for a 10-6 come-from-behind win over Clearfield in Mountain League high school girls softball action at the Bison Sports Complex Tuesday.
The Lady Bison were held to four hits by winning pitcher Catherine Miller, two of them run-scoring singles by Sierra Jones.
They got to Miller for three hits and four runs in the second inning to grab a 5-3 lead.
Aspen Bishop led off with a triple to center field and scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Brooke Cline singled to right for an RBI, stole second and dashed home on Jones’ single to right. Jones then stole second and continued to circle the sacks on two Lady Bearcat throwing errors.
Miller, who racked up 11 strikeouts, proceeded to stifle the Clearfield offense, retiring 13 of the next 14 batters until the seventh inning when Myra Kavelak was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on Jones’ second safety with two outs.
Half of the runs allowed by Lady Bison hurler Raeleigh Redden were unearned, including two of the three in the tie-breaking sixth inning and the two insurance tallies in the seventh.
Redden also piled up 11 strikeouts, but she walked four and hit three batters, and the three Lady Bearcats who came around to score in the sixth received free passes to first.
A passed ball, an error and Morgan Peterson’s fourth consecutive hit provided Miller all the runs she needed.
Hannah Varner’s third single and two Lady Bison miscues completed the scoring for Huntingdon.
The Lady Bearcats (2-5 ML) took their short-lived 3-1 lead in the second inning with three hits around a hit batsman and a walk, all with two outs.
Single runs in the third and fourth innings made it 5-5 and set the stage for their strong finish.
Clearfield, which had beaten Huntingdon 9-2 on April 1, tumbled to 3-6 with its fifth loss in a row.
The Lady Bison will be at home again Thursday to take on Bellefonte.
