A suicide bomber on a motorbike blew himself up in front of the Kabul Bank in Jalalabad city early Saturday, a local government spokesman said.
At least 33 people were killed and more than 100 others wounded, Najibullah Kamawal, Head of Public Health Department in Nangarhar province, told CNN on Saturday.
The bomber detonated his charge at the peak of rush hour, on the first day of the week, when the bank could be expected to be crowded.
A government spokesman, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, confirmed that there was only the one explosion.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid denied responsibility for the attack and condemned it in a text message to media.
