Vera Mae (Round) Spencer, 97, of Irvona died Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at UPMC Altoona.
Born Dec. 4, 1917 in McCartney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Davis Round and Catherine (Moore) Round.
Mrs. Spencer was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in the WAVES during World War II. She was one of the first women to enlist from Clearfield County.
She married the late Dudley Spencer on March 11, 1946 in Winchester, Va.
Mrs. Spencer attended both the Hunter College and the Iowa College.
She was an active member of the Irvona Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder for 33 years and treasurer for 19 years. She was also a Sunday school and Bible school teacher, a member of the Tru-Blue Club and the co-founder and editor of the Presby Church newspaper.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth, a sister, Thelma Dotts and three brothers, Elsworth Moore, William Round and Grant “Bucky” Round. Mrs. Spencer was the last surviving member of her family.
She is survived by four daughters, Jeannine (Arky) Henry of Irvona, Joann (Neal) Franchock of Glen Hope, Janet (Roger) Bietz of Curwensville and Jayne (David) Vaughn of New Millport and a son, Dudley (Tammy) Spence II of Irvona.
She is survived by eight grandchildren, Neal (Missy) Franchock, Jonathan (Danelle) Franchock, Jason Franchock, Camille (Tim) Luzier, Melanie (Nathan) Dotts, Jennifer (Jason) Vingless, Dudley (Lynn) Spencer III and Alyssa (Rob) Plummer.
She is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday at Kruise-Spewock Funeral & Cremation Services Inc., Madera, and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Irvona Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Willis Emond and the Rev. Richard Ginter officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Fruit Hill Cemetery.
