NEW WILMINGTON — Sophomore Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) won the long jump at the Westminster Invitational in Burry Stadium Saturday with a leap of 5.08 meters (16 feet, 8 inches).
She bested two dozen competitors to help the Golden Eagles place fifth in the 22-team event with 63 points, just three behind host Westminster.
Shomo also cracked the 13-second barrier in the 100-meter dash for the first time, posting a 12.97 to place eighth in the sprint that attracted 43 entries, and established a record of 27.31 seconds in her first race at 200 meters to finish 17th place in a dash that had 58 runners.

FAIRFAX, Va. — Sophomore Rebecca Johnson (Curwensville) set a personal record for the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:19.61 at the Mason Spring Invitational in George Mason Stadium Saturday.
Her previous best was 5:34.10 last year.

BASEBALL
CLARION — Senior second baseman/designated hitter Derek Danver (Clearfield) banged out two hits in three consecutive games over the weekend for Clarion, capping a 7-for-18 week that boosted his average to .342.
After dropping twinbills to Seton Hill at Greensburg on Monday April 6, and to Gannon at Erie Saturday, the Golden Eagles recorded their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division sweep in nearly two years by topping Gannon 7-3 and 6-5 Sunday as the host team on the Golden Knights’ diamond.
Danver had two singles and two RBIs, one when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, in the opener.
He doubled home what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning of the nightcap.
Danver, who has nine multi-hit games, is second among the Golden Eagles in hits (27), batting average and on-base percentage (.448) and is tied for second in RBIs (14). He has three doubles and two home runs.
Clarion is 7-20 with a 5-15 PSAC-West record.

ALTOONA — Freshman second baseman Jarrett Fulmer (Clearfield) played in three of Penn State Altoona’s seven games last week with three hits in seven trips to the plate.
He singled twice and drove in a run in a 9-6 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win over Pitt-Bradford at Stewart Athletic Field Saturday.
The Lions were 3-4, including an 11-6 road loss to No. 8-ranked Frostburg (Md.) State (27-3) Sunday, and now stand 10-17 with a 3-8 AMCC record.
Fulmer has appeared in 20 games with 12 hits and a .261 average. He has two doubles, four RBIs and six runs scored.

SOFTBALL
JOHNSTOWN — Freshman pitcher-outfielder Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) was 1-2 in the circle, with one of the losses a 1-0 decision, and 6-for-18 at the plate for the first-year Pitt-Johnstown team in three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division doubleheaders last week.
She accounted for the lone Mountain Cat win with a three-hitter in a 7-2 road win over Clarion Saturday. The right-hander struck out four, walked three and hit one to chalk up her third victory.
In addition, Hoffman registered her first RBI with a forceout and scored a run in UPJ’s game-deciding four-run outburst in the sixth inning.
Two days earlier, Hoffman was a tough-luck loser against Mercyhurst at the Iron Horse Complex in Windber, a second-inning homer the only run. She spaced nine hits while striking out one and walking one.
Hoffman had three of UPJ’s six hits in that twinbill and also singled in both of Sunday’s losses, 12-9 and 12-1, to Indiana University of Pennsylvania at the Richland Elementary School.
She was tagged with the nightcap defeat, surrendering 10 hits, five walks and nine earned runs in four innings, as the Mountain Cats tumbled to 4-10 in the PSAC-West and 4-18 overall.
Hoffman is 3-8 with a team-best 5.77 earned run average in 12 appearances with a team-high 11 starts and eight complete games. She has worked 60.2 innings with 26 strikeouts and 31 walks.
Her batting average jumped from .105 to .216 with the good week at the plate. She is 8-for-37 with one double, one triple and two RBIs.

WINCHESTER, Va. — Freshman shortstop Megan Vanderburgh (Clearfield) enjoyed her first three-hit game for Shenandoah in a 4½-inning, 13-0 romp over Sweet Briar at Henkel-Harris Field Sunday afternoon.
She also scored three runs as the Hornets improved to 7-11 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and 7-19 overall after winning the opener 9-0 in six innings.
Pacing a 15-hit attack lifted Vanderburgh’s average to .222 on 18 hits, including two doubles, in 81 at-bats.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Sophomore Heather Picard (Clearfield) marked her return to the Mount Aloysius team with a short stint, and the victory, as the Mounties defeated Hilbert (N.Y.) 10-2 for a doubleheader sweep at the D’Youville College Complex Sunday.
A conflict with class schedules prevented the right-hander from reporting at the start of preseason, but she will be counted on to help down the stretch in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with the Mounties at 8-2 and tied for third place, one game out of the lead.
Picard did not allow a hit and struck out two Hilbert batters, but she walked three and gave up one unearned run in 2.1 innings. She departed with Mount Aloysius (15-9) in front 4-1, and Sam Crilley closed out the five-inning Mercy Rule win.
In her rookie season, Picard led the 28-12 Mounties in appearances (24) and starts (20) and was second in complete games (11).
She had a 13-6 record, tied for the most wins for the AMCC runners-up, and posted a 3.71 earned run average for 117 innings. She was second in strikeouts with 91 while issuing 37 walks and hitting four batters.

MEN’S GOLF
APOLLO — Thiel freshman Jason Thorp (Curwensville) toured The Links at Spring Church with identical rounds of 79 Saturday and Sunday to finish in a tie for 26th place with a 158 at the Edward Jones Shootout hosted by Carnegie Mellon.
Thorp and Will Malady tied for third for the Tomcats, whose 315-302-617 total ranked fifth among the six teams entered.
On Wednesday, Thorp carded a 75 at the Grove City Country Club as Thiel finished second in the seven-team field at Grove City’s McBride-Behringer-Allen “MBA” Invitational.
He tied for sixth overall, with teammates Jeff Jenkins (73) and Aaron Wakely (74) finishing higher.
The Tomcats opened the season in California’s Vulcan Invitational at the Cedarbrook Golf Club April 3-4, with Thorp shooting rounds of 85 and 88 for a 173 total that put him in a tie for 55th among 69 golfers from 13 teams.
Thiel placed eight with a 322-330-652.
