SPRING MILLS — Defensive lapses by the Clearfield Area High School softball team enabled Penns Valley to score six unearned runs and go on to a 7-2 victory in Mountain League action Tuesday afternoon.
Winning pitcher Abby Thom and Lady Bison Raeleigh Redden breezed through the first three innings, each allowing one hit and facing only 13 batters, one over the minimum.
In the top of the fourth, Clearfield (3-4) grabbed a short-lived lead when Karlie Lewis socked a two-out double into left center to drive in Aspen Bishop from first base.
Then, the defense collapsed behind Redden, who suffered the loss despite allowing only three hits and striking out six in four innings.
The Lady Bison were guilty of six errors, matching the total they had in the previous three games.
Harley Hess and Liz Brooks singled for the only Lady Ram hits in the inning.
Lewis gave up one hit and one run after relieving Redden.
Clearfield’s final run came in the seventh on singles by Victoria Ireland and Lauren Butler and two wild pitches by Thoms, who wound up with a five-hitter. She had four strikeouts with no walks.
The Lady Bison will be back on their home diamond Thursday to play Central.
