PENFIELD – Officials at the Parker Dam State Park have announced programs to be held during the month of April.
Wednesday, April 8
Wildflower Wednesdays: 6:30 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
This series of Wednesday evening walks will be in search of floral signs of spring. Participants will look for some of the best colors of the season as a variety of species come into bloom. These walks will continue until June 3.
Friday, April 10
Woodcock Watch: 7:45 p.m. – Tyler Cabin
The American Woodcock, aka “Timberdoodle,” puts on a fancy flight in the spring of the year when trying to attract a mate. This can be seen fairly up close and personal if you know how and when to get close. Meet at the Tyler Cabin (previously “Camp Shawnee” or the “Cabin Classroom”) to learn more and hopefully see this display.

Friday, April 17
Dynamics of Fly-casting: 7:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Looking to learn the basics of fly-casting, or to revamp your skills? Dynamics of Fly-casting is a great way to do just that. The viewer will learn the important elements of great casting, vital hand and arm movements, practice routines that teach how to make almost all kinds of casts, along with some special tips.

Amphibious Spectacular: 7:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Every spring the area’s seasonal pools draw various species of amphibian. Join us to learn just what makes frogs and salamanders so cool! You don’t want to miss the opportunity to learn of these seasonal treasures!

Friday, April 24
Pennsylvania Black Bear: 7 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Whether it is awe or fear that you feel when you see a bear, you probably don’t know the entire story of these incredible animals. Join us to learn more about their life and survival in Penn’s Woods, as well as what scientists have learned about them over the years.
Saturday, April 25
Woodsy Owl Volunteer Day: 9 a.m. – Host Site (#107) and 1 p.m. – Pavilion 1
A variety of projects at various skill levels will be available to volunteers. On Friday, April 24, campsites will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The normal overnight camping fee (for April 24-25) will not be charged in agreement that campers participate in both the Saturday morning and afternoon work sessions that will be used to spruce up the park for the upcoming summer season. Volunteers are also welcome to come out to the park just for the day. Aside from the free weekend of camping, participants will experience the rewards of volunteering in the outdoors and improving the natural and recreational resources.
Woodsy Owl Awards: 5 p.m. – across from Host Site (#107)
It’ll begin with the creation of a matchless fire to warm you and end with s’mores to delight you. Volunteers will be recognized for their efforts and can see what other volunteers have helped to accomplish throughout the day. Come enjoy some fellowship with other park volunteers and partake of the light refreshments.
