CURWENSVILLE – In a season that was supposed to begin on March 24, the Curwensville Area High School girls’ softball team finally took the field Monday afternoon with a home game against the Lady Owls of Harmony.
And what a way to start the season as Lady Tide pitcher Rylee Young, a junior, was in complete control, throwing a no-hitter in defeating the Lady Owls, 6-0.
Young struck out seven and walked none.
Curwensville scored two each in the first and second innings and one apiece in the third and sixth.
Sophomore Kaylee Harnett, playing second base, had two hits and two RBI’s for the Lady Tide with senior catcher Alaina Stiles also picking up two hits in the winning effort.
Senior First baseman Nikki Harker drove in two runs for Curwensville while sophomore Camryn Richards had the only extra base hit, a double.
Lady Tide sophomore shortstop Hannah Dixon had three stolen bases.
Long time Curwensville head coach Allen Leigey was happy to finally get his team some action, “This was the first time, including pre-season, that the girls played on a grass field. I was worried about that, but I thought they handled it pretty good because we made a lot of plays.”
Leigey closed with, “Again, overall, as a whole, we did well and of course Rylee (Young) was the story with her no-hitter. I also thought we hit pretty well for the first time out.”
Curwensville will host Sheffield on Wednesday with a doubleheader that starts at 3 pm.
