HUNTINGDON — Raeleigh Redden pitched a two-hitter and Victoria Ireland drove in three runs as the Clearfield Area High School softball team rolled past Huntingdon 9-2 in a Mountain League makeup game Wednesday afternoon.
Redden, who struck out seven and walked four, was working on a no-hitter with two outs in the fifth inning when Hannah Varner doubled and Janay McCrum singled to break up her shutout.
A fast start set the tone for the Lady Bison’s second win in three games.
After Brooke Cline, Erica Hanes and Karlie Lewis drew walks in the top of the first inning off of Maddie Troha to fill the sacks, Brittani Priester and Ireland singled to left for RBIs, another run scoring when Ireland’s hit was misplayed. Sierra Jones singled to load the bases for Redden, who was hit by a pitch to force in the fourth run.
A trio of two-out hits enabled Clearfield to continually widen the gap.
Nikki Brossard delivered in the third inning, Ireland came through with a two-run single in the fourth and Hanes pounded an RBI double in the seventh.
“Those timely hits were important, because they brought in a second pitcher and she threw really hard,” Lady Bison coach Bob Lewis said. “It took us an inning or so to get adjusted to her.”
“All around, it was a pretty solid effort. Raeleigh pitched well and the kids made some nice plays behind her. We had some errors, but the kids are getting better as they get more and more experience.”
Ireland and Priester had two hits apiece while Cline, Lewis and Priester scored twice for the Lady Bison, who will hop on the bus again Thursday for a trip to Tyrone.
