PLAINFIELD, CT (WFSB) — Police said a Plainfield man accused of throwing his own 3-month-old baby girl against a wall. Now, the baby’s grandfather is speaking out about her injuries.
According to court documents, 36-year-old Robert Tarkowski told the baby’s mother, his daughter was crying and he couldn’t make her stop.
Police said the infant had six skull fractures and her left arm was fractured. She was rushed to Windham Hospital before being transferred to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford.
“The situation is completely disgusting. Anyone who can do that to a child should be put away for a long time,” Steven Poplasky, who is the victim’s grandfather, said.
During the police investigation, Tarkowski admitted to watching his child at his home on South Main Street in the Moosup section of Plainfield last week and causing the injuries to the infant.
“You jump into a mode of let’s save this child, let’s get her to the hospital and get her the medical attention she needs,” Poplasky said. “You just focus on the child.”
Attorney’s told the judge Tarkowski made no attempt to call 911. According to attorney, Tarkowski told the child’s mother that if he wanted to kill the baby, he would have “snapped her [explicit] neck and thrown her in the dumpster.”
Tarkowski was arrested in Sterling early Saturday morning and charged with first-degree assault, risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment. He was arraigned at Danielson Superior Court on Monday.
As for the child, she is doing better and the family is being hopeful that she doesn’t have any permanent damage.
“She seems to be normal now. It’s just a healing process is what it is but the situation is just completely disgusting,” Poplasky said.
The baby has been released from the hospital and is staying with her grandparents.
During the arraignment, the mother of the child said she is fearful for her safety. Poplasky said the couple had past problems and hopes this is a wake up call for those who have been abused.
“A violent relationship they need to get out immediately and get some help because love is blind and people do that revolving door,” Poplasky said. “It could have lead to death, so she is the lucky one.”
The judge raised bond for Tarkowski from $250,000 to $300,000. He posted bond and his next court appearance for Tarkowski is May 1.
