Carole A. Hicks, 77, of Osceola Mills died Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Penn Highlands in Clearfield.
Born Aug. 23, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Elsie (Wertz) Webster. She married Edward L. Hicks on July 16, 1960 in Chicago, Ill. He survives at home.
Mrs. Hicks was of the Christian faith.
She was a retired registered nurse. She had worked at the former Philipsburg State General Hospital; the Sloan Kettering Cancer Institution, New York City in 1961; the Brooklyn Veterans Hospital from 1961 –Â 1962; the Hines Veterans Hospital in Chicago, Ill. from 1962 – 1964; the Resurrection Hospital in Chicago, Ill. from 1966 – 1968; and the Ann Arbor Veterans Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. from 1968 – 1972, where she co-authored a hospice program for terminally ill veterans to be cared for at home by their family (this was the first program of this type in the country).
She also worked in the former Clearfield Hospital emergency room, where she retired from. After her retirement, she continued to work for Dr. Larry Adams.
She was a 1955 graduate of the former Osceola Mills High School and a 1958 graduate of the Temple University School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She received her trauma certification from John Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Md.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Douglas Arthur Hicks and his wife, Sri A. Hicks of High Point, NC and Jonathan Drew Hicks and his wife, Crystal O. Hicks of Cordova, Tenn.; a brother, John A. Webster and his wife, Linda C. Webster of Washington, Ga.; four grandchildren, Matthew B. Hicks, Shelby L. Hicks, Alexander S. Hicks and Ryan E. Hicks; and a cousin, Vanetta Webster Irwin.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at the Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Osceola Mills, with the Rev. Glen Eason officiating. Burial will be at the Umbria Cemetery in Osceola Mills.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of the funeral service at the funeral home.
