Russian authorities arrested two men Saturday in the murder of opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, Russian state media reported.
Nemtsov, one of President Vladimir Putin’s outspoken critics, was gunned down with a pistol on a Moscow bridge across from the Kremlin in late February.
Surveillance video showed someone darting from the sidewalk and into a nearby car right after he collapsed.
Putin has been informed of the arrests, Russian media said, citing Federal Security Service director Alexander Bortnikov.
He said the suspects are from the southern region of the North Caucasus, known for years of unrest and rebellion against Moscow.
Opposition blames Putin
But opposition sympathizers and people close to Nemtsov are pointing the finger at Putin and the Russian government, saying the former deputy prime minister under former President Boris Yeltsin is one in a list of Putin’s opponents who have been killed.
Russia’s President shares “political responsibility” for Nemtsov’s assassination, his daughter Zhanna Nemtsova said Friday in her first TV interview since his death. She spoke from Germany.
Nemtsov had been arrested several times for speaking against the government.
