Edsel F. “Eddie” Hurwitz, 90, of Philipsburg died Monday, Feb. 16, 2015 at the Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.
Born Nov. 2, 1924 in Lock Haven, he was the son of the late Jacob and Ann (Finberg) Hurwitz. He married the former Marjorie Kantar on Dec. 22, 1953 in Harrisburg. She survives at home.
Mr. Hurwitz was a member of the former Sons of Israel Congregation in Philipsburg.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the AMVETS Post No. 159 and the American Legion John Ashley Dennis Post No. 437, both of Philipsburg.
He was a life member of the B.P.O. Elks No. 1173, Philipsburg. He was also a member of the Isaac Kantar B’nai Brith Lodge in Clearfield.
Mr. Hurwitz loved Philipsburg and its residents. He did a lot for other people from the goodness of his heart, not for recognition.
He was an outstanding member of the Moshannon Valley Economic Development Partnership. Along with Luther Warsing, he was one of the managers of the Mid State Airport for many years.
After his discharge from the U.S. Army, he returned to Philipsburg to work in his family’s furniture and hardware stores. Thereafter, he and his brother, Alfred, formed Hurwitz Brothers, a real estate development company in Philipsburg.
He was a 1943 graduate of the Philipsburg High School and had attended Penn State.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Alfred B. Hurwitz.
Along with his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Ilene Hurwitz Schwartz and her husband, Louis of Pittsburgh. Mr. Hurwitz is also survived by a grandson, Benjamin A. Schwartz of Pittsburgh, who is currently a junior at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home in Philipsburg with Rabbi David Ostrich, officiating. Burial will be at the Sons of Israel Congregation Cemetery in Philipsburg.
Friends will be received from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Mr. Hurwitz was a devout family man and will be remembered for the following quote, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift. That is why they call it the present.”
