Former Vice President Dick Cheney will headline House Republicans’ biggest annual fundraising dinner next month, the National Republican Congressional Committee announced Wednesday.
In a statement, NRCC chairman Greg Walden called Cheney, who served under George W. Bush, “a dedicated public servant” and “true patriot.”
“The Vice President has worked tirelessly to protect our freedom and improve the lives of all Americans during his time, both in the House of Representatives and the White House,” Walden said.
“We are grateful for all of his hard work and all he continues to do for both our country and party,” Walden added.
Last year’s headliner was former secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and the March Dinner brought in $15.1 million for the committee tasked with helping the GOP defend its majority in the House.
Cheney’s far from a star in the GOP —Â he left office deeply underwater with Americans, and an online YouGov/Economist poll conducted last June showed 52 percent of Americans still viewed him unfavorably.
But with many of the party’s biggest names preparing potential presidential bids, the pick of Cheney helps the committee avoid the appearance of picking favorites in the wide-open field.
