WRESTLING
BEREA, Ohio — Sophomore 165-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield) was one of two Lycoming champions at the 29th annual John Summa Memorial Tournament in Baldwin-Wallace’s Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse Saturday.
After pinning Eric Tuck of Waynesburg at the 2:38 mark, Barger avenged an early-season 4-3 loss to Brandon Collins of Thiel with a 1-0 decision and then stunned nationally-ranked David Shapiro of Baldwin-Wallace with a 38-second fall.
The finals were anticlimactic for Barger as he received a medical forfeit from Sam Guidi of Waynesburg.
Shapiro, who came back to claim third place, was No. 9 in InterMat’s latest NCAA Division III rankings.
D3wrestle.com had Shapiro No. 10 and both Collins and Guidi among the eight “contenders” they list behind the Top 10.
Lycoming, No. 20 in the latest NCAA coaches’ rankings, earned 96 points to place third in the 11-team field behind No. 13 Baldwin-Wallace (159.5) and No. 19 SUNY Brockport (131) and just ahead of No. 21 and defending champion Waynesburg (94).
Barger’s record is 28-7 with nine falls, three technical falls and five major divisions. He is tied for the Warrior lead in falls and tech falls.
