CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Chapter of the AAUW will hold its annual Books-Sandwiched-In series at the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library on Wednesdays throughout March.
Each year the AAUW organizes four book reviews presented by local book lovers and authors. Speakers share information about a selected book while the audience enjoys a meal prepared by the event organizers.
AAUW: Books-Sandwiched-In will begin at 12 p.m. March 4. Barb Schmaus will present “Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness” by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Kabat-Zinn, PhD., is well known for his works on meditation and mindfulness, in addition to his Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. This book outlines the eight-week MBSR program and is an introduction to the practice of mindfulness meditation and the positive effect it can have on life, health and well-being.
At 12 p.m. March 11, “Paris: The Novel“ by Edward Rutherford will be reviewed by Gayle Gearhart. This historical novel tells the dazzling tale of the City of Light and unravels a coming of age story filled with thrills, passion, secrets and love. Through rich detail, the author presents an interesting blend of characters that are brought to life in a narrative sure to capture all readers.
Denny Shaffner will present John Bard’s “History of the Old Bucktails” on March 18 at 7 p.m. The book was first issued as a newspaper history and was written by Editor John P. Bard and printed in the Curwensville Herald. Lieutenant Bard from Co. K of the 42nd regiment of the Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteers wrote from his experience in the American Civil War.
The series will conclude at 12 p.m. March 25 with “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr and reviewed by Liz Stumpf. In this touching novel, Doerr delivers a stunning, historically driven story that took 10 years to write. Set in Germany and France during the World War II period, the reader is swept into a narrative of glorious detail and heart-rending text.
The cost for the lunch provided during the presentations is $4. The evening presentation by Denny Shaffner features cookies and punch and will cost $3. The proceeds from all four programs fund projects sponsored by AAUW.
