The Penn State Extension Dairy Team is offering two on-farm culturing workshops in February to help participants learn proper techniques for reducing the incidence of mastitis, one of the most costly diseases on a dairy farm.
The on-farm culturing workshops cost $45 without supplies or $60 with supplies, and will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Dates are:
- 24, Juniata County: Spruce Hill Grange, Route 75 South, Port Royal
- 26, Crawford County: Penn State Extension, Crawford County, 13400 Dunham Rd., Suite A, Meadville
The hands-on workshop will focus on correct ways to collect milk cultures, how to set up cultures for on-farm identification and the knowledge to identify bacteria grown.
Participants in past workshops have benefited, with 77 percent decreasing their Somatic Cell Count by an average of 133,000 cells/ml.
