WILKES-BARRE — Lycoming sophomore 165-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield) lived up to his No. 3 seed for the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships by winning five of six matches Saturday in the Marts Center.
After opening with a 14-1 major decision against Ben Wise, Barger was upset 9-5 in the quarterfinals by No. 6 seed Jacob English. Both are Messiah wrestlers.
Barger (22-7) charged back with four bonus-point victories, tech falling King’s Ryan Carden 15-0, pinning teammate Walter Fox in 1:29 and major decisioning Wilkes’ Stephen Turner 16-2 for his 50th career win before avenging his loss to English with a 38-second fall.
The Warriors, ranked No. 22 in NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and InterMat, had four other placewinners and finished fourth in the five-team tourney with 58.5 points.
Delaware Valley, No. 6 in the latest d3wrestle.com rankings, edged No. 3 messiah 125.5-124 for the team title, each boasting five individual champs. Both teams are ranked in the NWCA and InterMat Top 10.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
CALIFORNIA, Pa. — Sophomore Krystal Wriglesworth (Clearfield) was a point-getter in two individual events and three relay races as California University of Pennsylvania left three teams in their wake at the Vulcan Invitational Friday and Saturday.
She was the third backstroker to touch the Hamer Hall wall in both the 100 and 200 with times of 1:04.18 and 2:23.43.
Wriglesworth turned in a season-best 28.91-second leadoff leg for the Vulcan’s ‘A’ 200 medley relay foursome that was victorious in 1:52.09.
She recorded a 1:04.91 backstroke split for the ‘B’ 400 medley quartet that finished second in 4:16.68.
And she led off with a 27.63 split the ‘B’ 200 free relay team that placed fourth in 1:48.12.
The Vulcans piled up 671 points to outdistance Lock Haven (358), Mansfield (288) and Chatham (278).

EDINBORO — Freshman Kara Thorp (Clearfield) knocked almost 20 seconds off her personal record for the 1000-yard freestyle while earning points in three events for Edinboro in a 136-125 win over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Clarion in McComb Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
Thorp placed third in the distance event in 11:39.90, took fourth in the 500 free in 5:37.62 and swam a 26.01 anchor leg for the Fighting Scot ‘B’ 200 freestyle relay team that was fourth in 5:37.62.
The Fighting Scots have a 3-3 dual meet record.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
LEWISBURG — St. Francis University (Pa.) sophomore Rebecca Johnson (Curwensville) placed eighth in the 1000-meter race at the Gulden Invitational in Bucknell’s Gerhard Field House Saturday.
Johnson’s time was 3:24.24 in her first attempt at that distance.
The Flash were last with 23 points in the eight-team event that was won easily by Bucknell with 241 points.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Clarion sophomore Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) competed in three events at the College Invitational hosted by Youngstown State at the Watson & Tressel Training Site Friday.
Shomo placed 16th in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 6½ inches (4.73 meters), 19th in the triple jump with a distance of 30-10¼ (9.40m) and 26th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.416.
