CURWENSVILLE – In a make-up game at Curwensville Area High School on Saturday the Curwensville Golden Tide beat the Moshannon Valley Black Knights, 42-34, in Moshannon Valley League (MVL) action.
The game had been originally scheduled for Friday, January 9, but was postponed due to winter weather.
Moshannon Valley beat Curwensville in the first game of the 2014-15 season for both teams, 51-41, on the Black Knights’ home court back on December 5.
Curwensville head coach Shane Pentz talked about some keys that led to the Tide win, saying, “Defensively, I thought we played very well. We were able to get out on their shooters to challenge them, especially in the second half. And at halftime we changed our offense. We moved Trey (Rauckhorst) to the high post, which then allowed us to get behind their defense for some easier buckets.”
It was a see-saw affair for most of the 32 minutes of action with the Knights taking a first period lead 11-7.
The Golden Tide (4-8) would then win the second and fourth periods with the third eight minutes ending in a draw.
At the half Curwensville held a one point edge at 18-17 and maintained that one point margin, 30-29, at the end of three.
It was the fourth period, especially at the start, that ended up separating the two squads, as the Golden Tide came out with a 7-0 run to go up by the biggest lead of the contest, 37-29.
The 7-0 run for Curwensville was powered by a three-pointer from senior Harrison Bloom and buckets by Trey Rauckhorst and Quamone Newkirk.
Moshannon Valley picked the fourth period to be its worst offensively, scoring just five points.
Pentz talked about the fourth period, especially at the beginning, commenting, “That seven-nothing run to start the fourth period was actually fueled by guys off of the bench. And we had four turnovers to start the second half, but only three more the rest of the game. That, taking care of the ball, allowed us to build a cushion. And I would like to mention that Alex (Hill) and Noah (Strickland) each had eight rebounds.”
Bloom paced the Golden Tide offense with nine points, while three Tide scored seven each in Jake Terry, Rauckhorst and R. J. Olson.
Moshannon Valley (5-5) was led by junior Dillon Houck, who dumped in 10.
Curwensville is now 3-2 in MVL play with Moshannon Valley at 2-2.
In junior varsity action Curwensville trounced the Black Knights 51-6. Zach Marshall lead the Tide with 18 while R. J. Olson and Curtis Linsenbigler each chipped in with 10 tallies.
The Tide travel to West Branch on Monday to play the Warriors in a Moshannon Valley League clash. West Branch defeated Curwensville in December, 81-61. JV action tips off at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
