LOCK HAVEN — Junior running back Beau Swales (Clearfield) was the recipient of the George “Big Train” Dintiman Award at Lock Haven University at the end-of-season banquet after being selected by the coaches as the Most Valuable Offensive Player for the 2014 team.
The award honors the Bald Eagles’ two-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference running back whose 32 rushing touchdowns still stand as the school record. Dintiman’s 13 TDs in 1956, his junior season, are No. 2 on the all-time list, and his name is prominent throughout Lock Haven’s record book.
Swales was the workhorse back for the 2-9 Bald Eagles with more than 20 carries four times in his first season as the starter, including 24 for 116 yards against Cheyney and 26 for 118 yards against Millersville in their two victories.
The 6-0, 205-pounder wound up with 190 carries for 593 yards and two touchdowns, caught 32 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns and returned 10 kickoffs for 209 yards, a total of 1,055 all-purpose yards.

EDINBORO — Clarion sophomore Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) earned 2,216 points to finish ninth in the 2014 Mike Kowal Pentathlon in the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Dome Friday.
The event was a first for Shomo, who placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 8¾ inches (4.79 meters), tied for seventh in the high jump at 4-5½ (1.36m), eighth in the 60-meter dash 10.60 seconds, eighth in the shot put with a heave of 24-9 (7.54m) and ninth in the 800-meter run in 3:11.10.
