Hyde Woman Pleads Guilty to Stealing from Charitable Organization
CLEARFIELD – A Hyde woman accused of taking a large sum of money from a charitable organization was in Clearfield County Court.
Julie Bain, 56, P.O. Box 34, Hyde, pleaded guilty to 30 counts of theft by deception. She was sentenced to four months to one year in jail and two years consecutive probation. She was fined $975 and must pay restitution of more than $35,600.
Her attorney stated Bain is disputing the amount of restitution.
DuBois City Police Receive Grant for Drug Collection Unit
DUBOIS – The DuBois City police has announced the department received a grant from CVS/Pharmacy to install a drug collection unit.
The new unit will be located inside the lobby of the police department. It will provide residents with a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medication, including controlled substances.
Woman Pleads Guilty to Stealing from Greeting Cards
CLEARFIELD – A DuBois woman accused of stealing money from greeting cards while working at an area post office pleaded guilty during plea and sentencing court in Clearfield County.
Jody Lynne Cavazza, 56, 382 DuBois Rockton Rd., DuBois, pleaded guilty to several counts of theft by unlawful taking in three, separate cases.
Police Take Part in Emergency Response Training
CLEARFIELD – Several officers from the Clearfield Borough and Lawrence Township police departments recently assembled for a day of emergency response training at a vacant property at the intersection of Water and Locust streets.
DuBois City Discussing Bill to Re-classify Special Exceptions as Conditional Uses
DUBOIS -The first reading of Council Bill No. 1986 occurred during last Thursday’s DuBois City Council work session. The bill is designed to amend Chapter 27 of the Code of Ordinances of DuBois City. The amendment would re-classify all uses as special exception throughout the various zoning districts to uses permitted as conditional use.
Maney: Rulings Reduce Real Estate Taxes for Clearfield School District
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Area School District recently received rulings from tax appeal hearings held on Oct. 13. Three properties had their assessed valuations reduced, resulting in a total reduction in real estate taxes of $72,359 for the district, according to a written report from Sam Maney, business administrator, that was provided at Monday night’s regular meeting.
Commissioners OK Local Match to ATA
CLEARFIELD – On Tuesday, the Clearfield County Commissioners voted to approve local match funding to the Area Transportation Authority (ATA) through the end of the current fiscal year in June.
Prior to the board’s vote, Commissioner John A. Sobel, chair, reminded that the county previously executed a quarterly payment rather than one annual payment. He explained that the commissioners felt the ATA had lost its focus and was concerned more about its own needs than that of its customers.
County Receives Clean Audit Report
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County Government was issued a clean audit report for 2013, announced Brent Thomas, certified public accountant, of Johnston, Nelson, Shimmel & Thomas LLP, at Tuesday’s commissioners’ meeting.
The county had previously adopted a balanced budget with its revenues to equal its expenditures. However, the actual audit showed revenues exceeded expenditures by $100,000 and an ending general fund balance of $4.9 million, he said.
Lake at Parker Dam State Park to be Drawn Down
PENFIELD – The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is planning a gradual five-foot drawdown of Parker Lake, located in Parker Dam State Park, Clearfield County, in order to make repairs to an undermined concrete block wall adjacent to Parker Lake and Mud Run.
Municipal Authority Investigating Suspected Theft of Services
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Municipal Authority (CMA) has initiated an internal investigation into the suspected theft of services at an apartment building on East Locust Street, according to Kevin A. Shifter, manager.
“We don’t have all of the facts yet,” he said. “It’s just suspicion. It’s not like we’re just dropping this. We’re just trying to gather our own facts and information. We got to be able to prove it.”
NEW YORK, NY – Helping honor the nation’s veterans, the Bellefonte Area High School and Glendale Junior-Senior High School Bands will march in “America’s Parade,” the 95th annual New York City Veterans Day Parade, on Nov. 11. The parade is the largest celebration of service in the nation, with participants from all over the U.S. marching up Fifth Avenue.
Commissioners Support PA Foreign Trade Zone Corp.
CLEARFIELD – At Tuesday’s regular meeting, the Clearfield County Commissioners voted in favor of supporting the Pennsylvania Foreign Trade Zone Corp. in a letter to the Cambria County Economic Development Authority.
Commissioner John A. Sobel, chair, announced that the commissioners had recently learned about a Foreign Trade Zone developing among counties to the south and east of Clearfield. He said the CCEDA had taken the initiative and will be in charge of the Foreign Trade Zone.
Men Accused of Poaching Elk Appear for Hearings
CLEARFIELD – The three men accused of teaming to poach one of the largest bull elk ever recorded in Pennsylvania, along with two other bulls in September appeared for preliminary hearings during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
WJAC-TV: Police: Man Wanted in Trooper Ambush is Captured
DUNMORE, Pa. (AP) – Authorities said they have captured a man accused of killing one Pennsylvania State trooper and seriously injuring another during an ambush outside police barracks.
Police said they have 31-year-old Eric Frein in custody. The ambush was Sept. 12. The seven-week hunt for him ended Thursday. Police haven’t released details of the capture.
Thompson: USDA Extends Enrollment Deadline for Dairy Margin Protection Program
BELLEFONTE – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced an extended enrollment deadline for the new dairy Margin Protection Program.
The voluntary program, established by the 2014 Farm Bill, provides financial assistance to participating farmers when the margin – the difference between the price of milk and feed costs – falls below the coverage level selected by the farmer.
Corbett Rallies with Supporters in Clearfield
CLEARFIELD – Gov. Tom Corbett rallied his supporters Thursday at the Grice Clearfield Community Museum and challenged them to gather more for him before Election Day on Nov. 4.
Corbett asked his supporters to reach out to other voters – Democrats and independents – to help him get re-elected as governor.
“I’ve been traveling the state to get my message out, but I also need your help to get voters to the polls,” he said. “…With your help, we can win.”
