Eleanor Althea Wheeler died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014 while residing at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clearfield.
She was a life-long resident of Clearfield and formerly of Barclay Street. She was the daughter of Beatrice and Edgar Wheeler, the sister of Charles Melvin Wheeler and the beloved aunt of Donna Lee Wheeler of Langhorne.
A strong and independent woman who enjoyed the quietness of her hometown and the simplicity of life, she spent many days hiking the mountains, making wind chimes from soda bottle tops or sitting on the back porch swing sipping tea.
On the other hand, her brother, Charles, had left Clearfield many years earlier to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and later raised his family in Bucks County. Ms. Wheeler sacrificed her own hopes and dreams in order to care for her aging parents.
Smart, witty and outspoken, she could debate among the best of them. Given the means and the opportunity, she would have enjoyed a career in politics or law, arguing for the rights of women.
She was a woman who taught her family the values of loyalty and honesty, as well as how to live a life where no document needed to be written but a handshake was good enough. She will be forever missed and remembered with much love and admiration. The tree where her and her family once carved their initials surely still remains.
Her family gives the sincerest gratitude for all the dedicated people of Mountain Laurel who helped care for Ms. Wheeler, especially Diana, Dixie, Karen and Linda. Her family also gives gratitude to all of those who came to visit, although they may not have ever met you.
In accordance to Ms. Wheeler’s wishes, there will be no public services held at this time.
The Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield, is in charge of arrangements.
