Centre LifeLink EMS Earns Re-Accreditation
STATE COLLEGE —Centre LifeLink EMS has been re-accredited for the fifth consecutive, three-year term (since 1999) by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) for its compliance with national standards of excellence.
With this achievement, Centre LifeLink is only one of six accredited ambulance services in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and in the top 1 percent of services in the country.
CAAS is a non-profit organization, which was established to encourage and promote quality patient care in America’s medical transportation systems.
Rice Honored at Historical Society Banquet
DUBOIS – Dr. Jeffrey Rice was presented with the DuBois Area Historical Society’s first Champion of History Award during its 32ndannual dinner held Sept. 18 at Christ Lutheran Church, DuBois.
Society President Ruth Gregori made the presentation to Rice for extraordinary efforts in historic preservation. The society established this award to recognize individuals, groups or organizations who have contributed to the goals of the purpose of the DuBois Area Historical Society as described in its mission statement.
Outdoor Furniture Dedicated at Kylertown Center for Active Living
KYLERTOWN – The late Dora and Lloyd Hampton had a lasting and positive effect on the Kylertown Center for Active Living.
They were among the first consistent visitors of the senior center, and Dora actually held a position there for a short time. They both loved the services provided and the company there each day.
Reynoldsville Man Jailed on Drug-Related Charges
WINSLOW TOWNSHIP – A 57-year-old Reynoldsville man, Charles Kenneth Leach, was jailed Saturday on drug-related charges, according to the state police at DuBois.
Leach was allegedly found to be in possession of 54 marijuana plants that had just been harvested. Also, he was allegedly found with approximately 25 grams of processed marijuana, drug paraphernalia and tools used to harvest marijuana, said state police.
DuBois Man Pleads Guilty in Sexual Assault Case
CLEARFIELD – A DuBois man accused of sexually assaulting a young girl has pleaded guilty in Clearfield County Court.
Christopher C. Davis, 23, 64 Hanes Dr., DuBois, pleaded guilty to indecent assault of child less than 13-years old and was sentenced by Judge Paul E. Cherry to 21 months to seven years in state prison.
Even though Davis underwent a sexual assessment and was determined not to be a sexually violent predator, he will have to register under Megan’s Law. He was fined $1 plus costs and he must complete the Project Point of Light program.
Curwensville Man Gets State Prison for Stealing Vehicles
CLEARFIELD – A Curwensville man charged with stealing nine vehicles and a burglary was sentenced to state prison during plea and sentencing court in Clearfield County.
Corey Tyler Swatsworth, 37, an inmate of state prison, pleaded guilty to burglary in one case and theft by unlawful taking in seven additional cases.

The search continues for Cpl. Donovan E. Clancy, 26, of Ridgway, assigned to Marine Wing Communication Squadron 18 base at Camp Foster, Okinawa.
Clancy was recently identified as the service member who was declared missing while wading in heavy current on the northwestern shore of Tinian Sept. 26.
Charges Filed in Poaching of Record-Class Bull Elk
Three bull elk illegally killed; one of them was among the largest ever recorded in Pennsylvania.
One of the largest bull elk ever recorded in Pennsylvania was shot illegally along with two other bulls this month, and three Centre County men have been charged with teaming in a poaching effort, the Pennsylvania Game Commission announced.
Penn Highlands Clearfield to Build Medical Facility in Philipsburg
PHILIPSBURG – Penn Highlands Clearfield, a subsidiary of Penn Highlands Healthcare, has announced that construction will soon be under way for its new medical facility in Moshannon Valley.
The Moshannon Valley Community Medical Building is scheduled to open in 2015. The 23,000-square-foot-building, which will be located on seven acres near the intersection of North Front and Railroad streets in Rush Township, will be the new home of Philipsburg Medical Services. Services provided at the location include primary care, surgical services, orthopedic services, outpatient diagnostic testing and ophthalmology.
First Ebola Case Diagnosed in the U.S.
Medical officials announced on Tuesday the first case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States. The patient, who has not yet been identified, is being treated in Dallas, Texas.
Trail Bridges Replaced in Elk State Forest
EMPORIUM – Four hiking trail bridges have been replaced in the Elk State Forest, according to Jeanne Wambaugh, district forester.
Further, two bridges were on the Quehanna Hiking Trail and two on the Bucktail Path. Each of the old bridges had failed to pass engineering safety standards.
Corbett Signs Legislation, Approves Recommendations to Combat PA’s Heroin and Opioid Crisis
JOHNSTOWN – Gov. Tom Corbett was joined yesterday by Senator Dominic Pileggi (R-Delaware) on the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown campus to sign into law life-saving legislation that will help to reverse heroin overdoses in Pennsylvania.
PH DuBois Receives Stroke Care Award
DUBOIS – Penn Highlands DuBois has received the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Silver-Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for the treatment of stroke patients.
“You are a part of an elite group of hospitals recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association,” Steve Dentel, representative for the AHA/ASA, said.

Manhunt Puts Hunting Season On Hold
The Pennsylvania Game Commission has temporarily closed all hunting and trapping seasons within seven townships in northeastern Pennsylvania, where the search continues for a fugitive wanted in the shooting death of a state police trooper.
Game Commission Executive Director R. Matthew Hough today issued an executive order to close temporarily the hunting and trapping seasons within Price, Barrett and Paradise townships in Monroe County and Blooming Grove, Porter, Lehman and Greene townships in Pike County.
Corbett Proclaims October as ‘Cyber Security Awareness Month’
HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett has proclaimed October as “Cyber Security Awareness Month” to remind Pennsylvanians of the importance of protecting their information and devices from online threats.
“Recent high-profile data breaches at retailers and financial institutions are a reminder of how widespread cyber threats have become,” said Corbett. “While there is no way to completely eliminate the risk, there are steps we can all take to reduce our chances of becoming a victim.”
Clearfield Woman Waives Hearing in Assault Rifle Theft Case
CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield woman who was allegedly involved in an assault rifle theft case waived her right to a preliminary hearing during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Amy Marie Welker, 33, of Clearfield will face trial on one count of conspiracy/receiving stolen property. She had charges of conspiracy/theft by unlawful taking and conspiracy/corruption of minors withdrawn from against her.
Campus Men Walk a Mile in Her Shoes
DUBOIS – A total of 34 Penn State DuBois men wore high heels for theWalk a Mile in Her Shoesevent on Wednesday.
The men’s march is meant to raise awareness of the battle against rape, sexual assault and gender violence.
Fall Festival and Pumpkin Float Returns Oct. 18 to Parker Dam
PENFIELD – Autumn is in full swing, and for many, this is their favorite time of the year.
Some enjoy the cooler weather. Others venture out to see nature’s leaf displays. Still more look forward to fresh apple cider and other treats normally enjoyed during the fall and harvest season.
These experiences and more will be available at Parker Dam State Park’s ninth annual Fall Festival and Pumpkin Float on Oct. 18. From 12 p.m. until 5 p.m., there will be traditional activities, such as apple cidering, candle dipping, bannock bread, butter making, natural dyes, dried meat, leaf art, pumpkin carving, apple butter, the camp cook and pioneer games.

DUBOIS – “Fight Back in Black: Girls Night Out 2014” will be held from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the DuBois Mall.
Hosted by The Women’s Health Center of Penn Highlands Healthcare, this may be called Girls Night Out, but it will have information for everyone.
Thompson Announces $85,000 Grant for Penn Highlands Healthcare in DuBois
BELLEFONTE – Today, U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-5) announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded a grant in the amount of $85,000 to Penn Highlands Healthcare (PHH) in DuBois.
