HYDE — The Clearfield High School boys and girls cross country teams each raised their record to 5-1 with sweeps of Mountain League foes on Tuesday.
The boys beat Central 18-44 and out ran Philipsburg-Osceola 23-38. The girls easily beat Central 15-50 and slipped by PO 21-34.
The top overall finisher for the Clearfield boys was, once again, freshman Alex Coval with a time of 18:28 to finish second to Philipsburg’s Nick Patrick who ran a 17:40.
Paige Mikesell, also a Clearfield freshman, was top overall on the girl’s side with a 20:57.
Clearfield head coach John Jacob noted his teams’ improving times, “We had a great night for both the boy’s and the girl’s teams.  Alex (Coval) was after Philipsburg’s top runner, Nick Patrick,  but the junior runner had a very strong race and Alex was unable to close the gap. Josiah McClarren was next across the line. He had the best race of his career breaking the 19 minute barrier for the first time. Assistant coach (Todd) Winters and I knew he had it in him and he ran a very smart race tonight. The next group of five runners – Grant Climie, Harry McMillen, Quentin Edwards, Brandon Lacock and Logan Gilbert all came in under 20 minutes. To have a group of runners all come in that quick was something that I haven’t seen since I started coaching here at Clearfield. The rest of our runners all came in with personal best times as well.  On the girl’s side, Paige Mikesell was the top finisher as she ran away from the field over the last two miles. Nikol Chew was was gaining on P-O’s Kylie Whitehead over the last half mile but ran out of room to overtake their top runner. This was a personal best time for Nikol. She ran a smart race and is consistently lowering her times over the last couple of races. Kristi Fox was not far behind and she also was able to get her best time of the season.  Next across were Hunter Gathagan and Claire Mikesell coming in ahead of Philipsburg’s third runner. We had a great meet and it is coming just in time for the Championships at the end of the season. We are looking forward to finishing out this week of training and heading up to the Ridgway Invitational on Saturday to see some of our district competition.”
