STATE COLLEGE – As fall begins, repair and rehabilitation work continues on a Centre County bridge rehab contract.
Once work is complete, area drivers will enjoy safer travel on bridges that will remain in service for years to come.
For the week of Sept. 22, activity at each site will feature:
Route 64 Bridge (Near Nittany):
- Work is continuing for installation of a new bridge deck and parapets.
- A 10-foot width restriction will remain in place through Oct. 31. Traffic will remain reduced to a single lane enforced by temporary traffic signals.
Route 322 Westbound Bridge (Overpass at Reese Hollow Road/East Mountain Road Exit):
- Route 322 traffic will continue to be reduced to one lane in the westbound direction.
- Route 3023, which is under Route 322 at Reese Hollow, will have a lane closure. The lane closure is necessary so that work underneath the structure can take place. The lane closure will be enforced by a self-regulating stop sign and drivers will need to take turns moving through the area. This traffic pattern will be in place until November.
- Work will continue to place a new concrete overlay, install new approach slabs, and make concrete repairs to the existing structure.
- A 12-foot width restriction will remain in place through Nov. 26.
Route 322 Bridge (the End of State College Bypass):
- Remaining work includes guiderail upgrades, raised pavement marker installation, and shoulder rumble strip installation. This work will take place at a later date under daylight traffic control. An alternating traffic pattern will be enforced by flaggers in the roadway.
Route 3040 Bridge (Julian at intersection with Beaver Road):
- Remaining work includes guide rail upgrades, which will be performed at a later date under daylight lane closures, enforced by flaggers in the roadway.
Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College is the contractor on this project. Overall work includes beam rehabilitation, deck and concrete repairs, guide rail updates, roadway paving and pavement markings.
Message boards in the area will give drivers advanced warning of restrictions and delays. Drivers are reminded to be alert for flaggers in the roadway, obey posted speed limits, move through work zones with caution and always buckle up.
