CLEARFIELD – On Tuesday, the Clearfield County Commissioners announced plans to contact the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and to request an updated reptile study for the site of the proposed Camp Hope Run landfill in Boggs Township.
The commissioners were contacted by a concerned individual about the rattlesnake population at the proposed landfill site. The individual also provided the commissioners with some “very good” photographs of the rattlesnake population, said Commissioner Mark B. McCracken.
According to him, the state’s Fish & Boat Commission conducted a reptile study at the proposed landfill site about five years ago. “We want the DEP to take another look here,” said McCracken, “and to update the reptile study on file.”
Commissioner Joan Robinson-McMillen didn’t believe the original study was conducted during a season when rattlesnakes would have been prevalently seen. McCracken said a reptile study should be conducted in May or June when rattlesnakes are moving out of their dens.
PA Waste LLC has proposed the construction of a landfill that would be located on an 845-acre facility boundary along state Route 153 in Boggs Township. It would be double-lined and able to receive 5,000 tons of waste daily for the next 25 years, according to previous GantDaily.com reports.
