Melvin C. “Pete” Helsel, 73, of Irvona died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014 in UPMC Altoona. He was born in Barnsboro, the son of Melvin and Dorothy (Simmers) Helsel.
He worked as a coal miner for Rushton Mines. He was a member of the United Mine Workers. He was a graduate of Hirem G. Andrews Center, Johnstown, in 1990
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Maxine (Keith) Helsel, and sons, Jim and Susan Helsel and David and Lisa Helsel.
Also surviving are a grandson, David and Linda Helsel; a granddaughter, Amanda and Tommy Chutko; a great-grandson, Landon Chutko; a brother, Robert and Norma Helsel; and sisters, Alice and Earl Blake, Dorothy Bush and Martha and Bill Jasper.
He was preceded in death by son, Roger Helsel, his parents and his step-mother, Georgia Kitchen Helsel
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lloyd-Dimmick Funeral Home Inc., Irvona.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Queen officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, LaJose.
