PORT ALLEGANY – The Curwensville Area High School football went on the road to open the 2014 season and it was quite an evening as the Tide dumped Port Allegany 48-16.
The Golden Tide used big plays all night to come away with the convincing victory as freshman running back Nick Stewart scored three times while junior quarterback Jake Terry tossed three first half touchdown passes.
The Tide received the opening kickoff and on the second play from scrimmage Stewart went off of the left side on a sweep and scampered 72 yards to pay dirt. Heather Thorp, a senior, made the first of her six PAT’s on the night as Curwensville went out in front early, 7-0, at the 11:02 mark of the opening quarter.
Later in the first, Terry hit Quamone Newkirk down the left sideline and the junior took it to the house on a 56-yard catch and run with 1:30 on the clock.
With a 14-0 margin to start the second frame the Golden Tide didn’t waste anytime as they scored again with 10:23 to go until halftime on a 46-yard screen pass from Terry to Stewart with Thorp’s extra point giving Curwensville a 21-0 lead.
Curwensville would increase the margin to 28-0 right before the bands came out to entertain the crowd at the half on a 16-yard Terry pass to Travis Lansberry. Lansberry, a senior, also rotated every other offensive series at quarterback with Terry.
The mercy rule came into play early (10:01) in the third quarter when Stewart ran for a 60-yard score followed by Thorp’s PAT making it 35-0 in favor of the Tide.
Hunter Johnson got into the scoring act with a 4-yard touchdown run with 5:21 remaining in the third to give Curwensville a 42-0 lead after three quarters.
Port Allegany junior quarterback Jordan Seefeldt would score twice for the Gators in the fourth quarter and also connect on two-point conversions after each score.
The final Tide score was by sophomore running back Kaleb Witherite who went 37 yards up the middle to complete the scoring for Curwensville at the 8:44 mark of the final quarter.
Unofficially Stewart had over 170 yards rushing in his first varsity appearance.
The Tide will have its first home game of the season on Friday, taking on Otto-Eldred at 7 pm.
