CLEARFIELD — Two fillies and a gelding that trotted to victories at the 2013 Clearfield County Fair returned to the Driving Park Tuesday and earned cooler blankets again in Pennsylvania Sire Stakes races for three-year-olds.
The repeat winners on the third card of this week’s harness racing meet were Cantabs Lightning, Tickettotheparty and Broadway Charm.
Fourth out of the gate for driver Wayne Long, Cantabs Lightning took command around the first turn, was up to the task when pressured by Glide by Shooting, driven by Roger Hammer, at the half and won handily by 5-3/4 lengths with a time of 2:07.1 in the Crawford Williams Memorial Division of the PASS Filly Trot.
Long, who hails from Camden, Del., also owns and trains the bay filly that has won six of her last seven starts on the Pennsylvania Fair circuit and has 12 wins in just 21 lifetime starts for earnings of $35,744.
Last year, Long and Cantabs Lightning scored a come-from-behind, half-length victory at the Driving Park for Long as she started her career with four consecutive wins.
Tickettotheparty proved how much she really likes this half-mile oval by bettering the lifetime mark she established a year ago when she broke her maiden with a 2:10 trip that was her lone win in 23 starts before Wednesday.
Escape Tactics, driven by Hammer, got away first in the Brooke Erin Yeager Memorial Division dash but broke trotting around the first turn.
Tickettotheparty and driver Mark Mosher inherited the lead and kept her four rivals in the rearview mirror the rest of the way, finishing 2-1/4 lengths in front of Long-driven Donna Bella in 2:07.3.
The first win in 14 starts this year upped the total of Tickettotheparty’s purses to $19,286 for lessee owner-trainer Clifton Green of East Earl.
Broadway Charm, the betting favorite in a July 19 race at The Meadows, continued the success he’s had for owner Susan Daugherty and trainer husband William Daugherty Jr. of Mercer by dominating the Back Stage Crew Division of the PASS Colt Trot after driver Steve Schoeffel took him to the front at the top of the backstretch.
The bay gelding stopped the clock at 2:03.4 with the 7-1/4-length win that was his seventh of the year and 14th in 30 lifetime starts. He’s earned more than $51,000.
In his first trip to Clearfield, Broadway Charm breezed to a new lifetime mark at 2:06.3 with his third win, which was by 18-1/4 lengths.
Joevidal, a bay gelding, got the nine-race card under way on another unseasonably cold afternoon by winning just his second start in 2:07 to earn the Mary Hainsey Memorial cooler blanket.
That set up a sweep  of the two Quaker State Three-Year-Old Trot dashes for Hammer with his own sophomore trotters that thrust him right into the thick of the chase for the Charles “Buster” DiSalvo Trophy that goes to the meet’s winningest driver.
The Yankees Win raced past Schoeffel’s Uber Doober Do in mid-stretch and was 3-1/2 lengths in front when she hit the wire in 2:07.
In 17 starts this year after winning her only race as a two-year-old, the bay filly has recorded four wins and placed second or third four times in pushing her earnings to $16,852.
With four wins apiece, Hammer, Long and Chris Shaw will be dueling for the DiSalvo Trophy in Wednesday’s meet-ending nine-race card for three-year-old pacers that begins at noon.
Shaw claimed a share of the lead earlier with Static Electricity in the PASS Filly Trot’s Dunlap/Swales Memorial Division.
They sat fourth for most of the first trip around the track before Shaw took him outside and past Hammer and Explosive Ripple in front of the grandstand. Brady Brown moved up Cantab Baby, a 2013 Clearfield County Fair winner, to challenge Static Electricity at the three-quarters pole, but the bay filly owned by Mason Shaw of Scenery Hill and trained by his father, Jason, responded and won by 2-3/4 lengths in 2:07.4.
Static Electricity went over $30,000 in earnings with her fourth win of the year and fifth in 29 lifetime starts.
Schoeffel, like Hammer, was a doublewinner as he guided Fly Past Hanover to victory in the Jeffrey “Niter” Hamilton Division of the PASS Colt Trot.
The bay gelding, also owned by Susan Daugherty and trained by her husband, got past Wingman Lauxmont going around the first turn and then had to hold off him off at the wiring, winning the closest finish of the day by a half-length in 2:05.2.
Fly Past Hanover has racked up six wins in 15 starts this year and 16 wins in 30 lifetime starts. His earnings have topped $65,000.
With three wins, Schoeffel is a threat in the DiSalvo Derby, too.
Brown, 21, became the youngest driver to reach the winner’s circle with Sheema Star in the Charles “Chick” Young Memorial Division of the PASS Filly Trot.
He had the bay filly owned and trained by his sister, Ashley, of Slippery Rock, on the front end except when She Nuit, with Long in the sulky, grabbed a brief lead going past the grandstand the first time.
Sheema Star won her sixth race in 19 lifetime starts in 2:08.4 to move past $20,000 in earnings. She’s five-for-seven this summer.
Bryce Truitt reined Mr Weaver to a gate-to-wire victory in the final race, the PASS Colt Trot’s Dawson & Chandler Ross Memorial Division.
Shaw and Blazin’ Tsunami, another betting favorite for a race at The Meadows earlier this month, made it exciting for the fans by closing to within a half-length.
Mr Weaver’s 2:05 dash for his seventh win in 31 lifetime starts boosted his earnings to $45,135.
