CLEARFIELD – PennDOT urges potential yard sale shoppers to pass over some secondhand items.
The reminder comes around the time of the annual “100-Mile Yard Sale,” that brings customers to parts of Clearfield, Centre, Elk and Cameron counties.
Child passenger seats and helmets are two items that should never be purchased after being used.
When purchasing a car seat at a neighborhood sale, the history of the seat cannot be known for certain. The seat may have been involved in a crash, or have structural issues including stress cracks and broken rivets.
It may also be expired or recalled. Most seats expire in six years, and if it is recalled, a safety deficiency has been identified.
Motorcycle and bicycle helmets should also be avoided when buying previously owned merchandise. Each is made to sustain the forces of one crash, and could have been dropped or damaged without showing outward signs of harm. Additionally, some helmets may also have an expiration date.
When traveling through an area with a large number of sales, motorists should be mindful of traffic entering and exiting the roadway. Shoppers should pull completely off of the roadway and ensure it is clear before attempting to cross.
