CLEARFIELD – The “Fizz, Boom, Read!” summer reading program at the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library continued last week with a great lineup of special presenters.
CNB Bank presented a pre-school program that was complete with a visit from CNBear.
School age participants joined science teacher Jodi Addleman, as she conducted experiments and Byron Parizek, a glaciologist from Penn State DuBois, as he educated youth on the science of glaciers.
Young adults and adults learned about the creative writing and publishing process from former resident and author Allison Crotzer Kimmel.
Adults also participated in a stroke awareness and prevention program offered by local nurse Jolene Barbazzeni.
“Fizz, Boom, Read!” will feature a number of events for people of all ages as the program continues next week.
On Monday at 6:30 p.m., “Family Fun Night: Families Flourish” with Tammy’s Garden will teach families gardening tips and allow them to decorate a planter to take home. Separate registration for this specific event is required and may be completed by contacting the front desk of the library.
Read-to-Me participants will find a flurry of activity on Tuesday, as they create a “Summer Snowstorm.” Children will use differing liquids and witness a snowstorm in a jar. The program begins at 10:30 a.m.
School Age A youth will express their creativity when they “Do the Robot” on Wednesday. The event, which starts at 10:30 a.m., allows youth to design their own robot using a can and other craft pieces. Participants are encouraged to bring a clean fruit or vegetable can with label removed to this craft.
On July 17, the library will host a combined School Age B and Spark a Reaction young adult summer reading program. Participants will join artist Diane Maurer in “Make Your Own Paper.” The event begins at 1:30 p.m. and separate registration is required.
Participation is limited 20 individuals and must be completed by contacting the front desk of the library. This program is brought to you by Galaxy, the Arts in Education Program of CIU No. 10. This project was made possible through the Arts in Education Partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency. It is funded by the citizens of Pennsylvania through an annual legislative appropriation, and administered locally by Galaxy. The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Read-to-Me, School Age A and School Age B participants are reminded to submit Super Stars earned between July 7 and July 12 into the weekly prize drawing sponsored by Fun Central by July 12 at 5 p.m.
Additionally, the summer reading store, “The Laboratory”, will have hours on Monday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and on July 18 from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. Youth participants may stop in during those hours to cash in earned Super Stars on available items.
Registration for the “Fizz, Boom, Read!” summer reading program continues throughout the summer. All registrations are completed online at the Shaw Public Library’s Web site, www.clearfield.org/shaw. Participants are asked to pick up their registration packets at the front desk of the library upon registering for one of the programs.
Children ages birth through pre-school age should enroll in the Read-to-Me program. Youth who have completed kindergarten through the second grade are encouraged to participate in the School Age A program and those who have completed the third through fifth grades will enroll in the School Age B program.
The Spark a Reaction young adult summer reading program is open to anyone who has completed the sixth through 11th grades, and the Literary Elements adult summer reading program is available to all adults, including 2014 high school graduates.
The library is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., and Fridays from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.
