Helen Louise (Kasubick) Kislack, 93, of Alexandria, Va. and formerly of Houtzdale, died peacefully Tuesday, July 8, 2014 in Alexandria, Va.
Born Feb. 1, 1921 in Dogtown, Woodward Township, she was one of seven children born to the late Frank and Helen (Swidersky) Kasubick.
Mrs. Kislack, who will be remembered for the twinkle in her eye and her infectious smile, was a long-time member of St. Barbara’s and Christ the King Catholic Churches, Houtzdale. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Victoria, No. 646.
She enjoyed reading, crocheting, playing cards, games and going to bingo, auctions and craft shows. She was a good cook and baker and loved tending to her flowers outside in the summertime.
Mrs. Kislack attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in Ocean. She and her late husband owned numerous businesses in Houtzdale, including a restaurant, the Gulf Service Station and the first self-service grocery store with frozen food and locker rentals.
On June 28, 1941 in Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Osceola Mills, she married Alex Kislack. He preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 2004.
She is survived by a son, Lawrence Kislack of Arizona; two daughters, Shirley Tirch and Bonnie Norris, both of Virginia; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Kislack was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two children, Patricia and William; three brothers, Frank, Thomas and Leonard; and three sisters, Mary Redzenski, Leona Tubo and Jean Kawa. She was the last of her siblings.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Houtzdale, with Father Joseph Staszewski celebrant. Burial will follow in St Barbara’s Cemetery, Brisbin.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale.
Staszewski will hold a vigil service at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. It will be followed by the recitation of the Rosary by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas at 6:30 p.m.
