AUSTIN – Officials at the Sinnemahoning State Park will offer a wide variety of programs the weekend of July 11-13, including flower drying, eagle watching, firefly study and kayak tour.
Preserving Summer’s Beauty: Flower Drying Workshop
Saturday, July 12
1 p.m. – 4 p.m., Park Office and Wildlife Center
Learn how to preserve the beautiful flowers of summer. Methods of plant preservation – hang drying, sand drying, and microwave drying – will be demonstrated during this three-hour workshop conducted by Pat Martin, a specialist in drying and preserving flowers.
Participants are welcome to bring flowers from their home gardens to practice these techniques. Additional flowers will be provided. There is no fee for this program, but pre-registration is required by Wednesday, July 9th.
Eagle Watch
Saturday, July 12
5 p.m. – 7 p.m., George B. Stevenson Dam
The young eaglet has learned to fly! View the action through binoculars and spotting scope with the help of park staff and volunteers. Staff will set up at the George B. Stevenson Dam Overlook or the Lake Day Use Area, depending on where the eagles are active that day.
Nature at Night: Fireflies
Saturday, July 12
8 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., Campground Amphitheater
Learn about fireflies, why they glow, and how you can help scientists learn more about fireflies in your area. Come prepared to collect and observe fireflies by bringing a flashlight and wearing long pants and close-toed shoes. All fireflies will be released back into the wild at the end of the program.
Morning Kayak Paddle
Sunday, July 13,
1 p.m. – 4 p.m., Lake Day Use Area
Enjoy a wildlife-watching tour of the edges and wetlands of the George B. Stevenson Dam. Beginners and experienced kayakers welcome. Kayaks, life-vests, and paddles provided. Swimmers only. Participants age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Program is free, but pre-registration is required.
If you need an accommodation to participate in Pennsylvania State Park activities due to a disability, please contact the park you plan to visit. With at least three days’ notice, interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available for educational programs.
