CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library’s “Fizz, Boom, Read!” summer reading program educated children and youth participants on many interesting ways water can be used during “Erin’s Exciting Experiments” week.
Read-to-Me combined water and vegetable oil and watched as colorful bubbles popped inside the bottle.
School Age A youth made a substance featured in a Dr. Seuss book called “Oobleck” and School Age B participants created slime.
Young adults rounded out the week with a presentation on the science of cooking and a cook-off. The fun and excitement continues next week during the “Fizz, Boom, Read!” summer reading program.
The activities begin on Monday at 6:30 p.m. with a Family Fun Night event. “Professor Hooley Returns” will feature children’s author Professor Hooley and his latest book, Farmer Joe and the Dancing Crow.
On Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., CNB Bank will present “CNBear and the Savings Club Gang.” Read-to-Me participants will join CNBear and his friends to learn all about saving and do some fun activities.
School Age A and B level youth are encouraged to join local teacher and library board representative Jodi Addleman for “Science in Action!” The program will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. with Addleman conducting a variety of experiments with the audience.
On Thursday, the School Age B youth participants will join Byron Parizek, a glaciologist from Penn State DuBois, for “Icy Science.” Parizek will share information about glaciers, ice sheets and his travels to Antarctica. This program begins at 10:30 a.m.
Young adults enrolled in the Spark a Reaction summer reading program are invited to join author and former resident Allison Crotzer Kimmel for a “Creative Writing Workshop.” The event, which is also open to adult summer reading participants, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. and will feature Kimmel sparking creativity and enlightening the audience on the publishing process.
Programming for young adults continues on Thursday at 2 p.m. with “Finances for Young Adults.” Representatives from Northwest Savings Bank want to help teens learn how to manage their finances early.
Registration for all young adult summer reading programs is required by calling the front desk of the library at 814-765-3271 during regular business hours.
Literary Elements, the adult summer reading program, will feature two events during next week’s programming lineup. In addition to Kimmel’s “Creative Writing Workshop,” adults are also are also invited to attend “Local Author Spotlight – Allison Crotzer Kimmel” scheduled for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Kimmel will offer a discussion and signing of her recently published books. Light refreshments will be served. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
Read-to-Me, School Age A, and School Age B participants are reminded to submit Super Stars earned between June 30 and Saturday into the weekly prize drawing for tickets sponsored by the State College Spikes by Saturday at 5 p.m.
Registration for the “Fizz, Boom, Read!” summer reading program continues throughout the summer. All registrations are completed online at the Shaw Public Library’s Web site www.clearfield.org/shaw.
Participants are asked to pick up their registration packets at the front desk of the library upon registering for one of the programs.
Children ages birth through pre-school age should enroll in the Read-to-Me program. Youth who have completed kindergarten through the second grade are encouraged to participate in the School Age A program and those who have completed the third through fifth grades will enroll in the School Age B program.
The Spark a Reaction young adult summer reading program is open to anyone who has completed the sixth through 11th grades, and the Literary Elements adult summer reading program is available to all adults, including 2014 high school graduates.
