HYDE — Undefeated Mifflin County struck for seven runs in the third inning and went on to hand the Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team a 13-1 setback at the Bison Sports Complex Wednesday evening.
The loss was the fourth in a row for the Chiefs since opening the Central Penn League season with a victory at DuBois.
They matched the visitors’ 1-0 start when Curt Collins singled with two outs in the bottom of the first frame, stole second and scored on Cole Kephart’s double that hit the fence in the left field corner.
Winner Russ Torquato silenced the Clearfield bats after that, allowing only two walks and a fifth-inning single by Josh Kennedy, who was erased on double play that ended the game because of the 10-run Mercy Rule.
Torquato had four strikeouts.
Mifflin County (4-0, 3-0 CPL) unlocked the tie after an error and a walk opened the door with one out in the third inning, tagging Spencer Herrington and Sawyer Rowles for five hits.
Isaac Strohecker, Drew Hannon and Jacob Larson cracked run-scoring singles and, following the pitching change, Heath Hidlay and Hunter Walker ripped two-run doubles.
Three of the runs were unearned, as were the trio Mifflin County tallied in the fourth inning thanks to two of Clearfield’s four misplays.
The winners added a pair of runs off Kennedy in the fifth when Max Remy doubled home Walker and scored on pinch-hitter Andrew Larson’s groundout.
Herrington suffered the loss in his mound debut for the Chiefs.
Clearfield will host Altoona Thursday at 6 p.m.
