D. Richard “Dick” Males, 78, of Treasure Lake, and a lifelong resident of DuBois, died Monday, June 2, 2014 at Penn Highlands DuBois.
Born June 1, 1936 in DuBois, he was the son of the late Marvin L. and Violet I. Fillhart Males. On July 4, 1957, he married Nancy (Shaffer) Males. She survives.
He was a quality inspector at Brockway Presses Metals for 31 years. After retirement, he worked as a courier for the S&T Bank for 13 years.
He was a life member of the J.E. DuBois Hose Company No. 3, and he served as fire chief for the DuBois City Volunteer Fire Department from 1973-1978. He had also served years as president of the fire department. He was a well-respected fireman for 60 years and many of his friends still called him “chief.”
He was also well-known around the area as a dirt track racer in the 1960’s and 1970’s, driving the No. 43 and No. 77 cars. He served as the past president of the board of directors of DuFast Transit.
He was a member of the Lakeside Methodist Church. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and all sports and loved his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed attending their many activities and will be missed by many.
He is survived by four daughters, Cynthia Steffey and her husband, Tim of Punxsutawney; Debra Fairman and her husband, Mark of DuBois; Marsha Males of Treasure Lake; and Brenda Allen and her husband, Dale of Rockton; 10 grandchildren, Molly, Kristen, Mark, Megan, Macie, Tonyia, Nichole, Lyndsay, Lacey and Derek; eight great-grandchildren, Zachary, Savannah, Mallory, Madelyn, Jack, Kylah, Ayden, Ella; and two great-grandchildren to be born this year. He will also be missed terribly by his dog, “Ted.”
He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Jane Males Long.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor David Nagele officiating.
